Survey Instructions

Thank you for participating in the Missional Church Readiness Survey. You are participating in a process of dialogue and conversation around the ways God might be inviting your congregation to imagine new ways of faithful life and witness as a congregation.

This survey is a combination of two kinds of data:
Quantitative — Designed to provide basic data about who attends; and
Qualitative — A series of questions designed to invite further dialogue about how we view our readiness for mission-shaped life as a church.

The following brief introduction provides information you'll need to contribute to this important church-wide conversation.

What is this Survey?

This survey is a tool for initiating listening conversations across the congregation. In a sense, it is like 'taking a photo' of your church at one moment in time. Imagine everyone standing together after a worship service with a photographer who takes a shot of you all together. When pictures like that are made available to everyone they often create wonderful conversations between one another. We tell each other stories and recall memories. We remember some who are not there, some who have changed a lot and recall the stories that have shaped various members in the photo. In this way a photograph becomes a wonderful resource for rich conversations about who we are as a community. This is one of the primary purposes of the survey. It is not designed as a measuring instrument to evaluate your congregation beside others. Neither is it designed as an instrument that is meant to pass the expectations of a social scientist designing a survey for research. Think of this survey as a resource to initiate dialogue with one another about who you are right now in terms of your missional life as a congregation.

How long will it take?

It will take you about 40 minutes to complete this survey. We want you to be thoughtful and give careful consideration to your responses. Some questions may seem repetitive or you may wonder about all the meanings of the words — that's okay, what we're looking for is what you think about the question and how you respond to it.

What's in the Survey?

It consists of:

   1. An initial section of data questions.
   2. A section containing sixteen sections with four questions in each section.
   3. A "Comments" section provided after each of the 16 sections. Any comments you make are recorded in the Survey Report just as they were written. Other members will read them but there will be no indication of names unless you provide that information in your response. Your personal responses in terms of the Survey itself, whether to the questions or comments, are anonymous.

The four questions in each section are a group. They are:

   5. Agree Strongly
   4. Agree
   3. Neither Agree nor Disagree
   2. Disagree
   1. Disagree Strongly

You will be asked to choose only one of these responses. Sometimes you will want to choose several selections, but this survey is designed for you to choose only one score for each question.

Each section is separated by a "Comments" question. Sometimes people want to say something about the question or say more about their response, and this question provides opportunity for you to do that. Please type comments ONLY to the questions in the preceding section for that comment question. Do not be concerned if you have few or no comments.

If you are not sure of a response, please leave the question 'unchecked'. When you are finished each page, please click on 'continue'. As you move through each page and click 'continue' your answers are saved.

Thank You for your time and effort to complete this survey.

Survey Data and Research

Answers to survey questions may be used for research by The Missional Network or by authorized persons requesting the information through their academic supervisors for use in graduate research programs. Only cumulative data will be used--no individual responses will be cited and no individual identities will be published. By taking this survey you are agreeing to having your answers included in these research projects.
